  In tiefer Trauer muss die
Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (Verband der
Europäischen Motorradfahrer-Verbände, FEMA) den Tod ihres
früheren Generalsekretärs, Simon Milward, bekanntgeben.
Simon verstarb am 4. März 2005 an den Folgen eines
Verkehrsunfalls nahe der Stadt Kayes in Mali, in West-Afrika.
Als
leidenschaftlicher Motorradfahrer und mit dem Wunsch, in seinem Leben
etwas zu bewirken, war Simon am 1. Januar 2000 in humanitärer
Mission zur Unterstützung von medizinischen
Wohltätigkeits-Organisationen zu einer Welt-umrundung mit dem
Motorrad gestartet. Simons Millennium Ride

sollte ursprünglich 18 Monate dauern; daraus wurde ein fünf
Jahre dauerndes Abenteuer. Simon wollte im Oktober 2005 in seine
Heimat nach Großbritannien zurückkehren. Die genauen
Umstände seines tödlichen Unfalls müssen noch
offiziell festgestellt werden. Simon Milward wurde 40 Jahre alt.
Für Europas Motorradfahrer
hat Simon viel bewirkt: 1992, im Anschluss an eine hauptamtliche
Tätigkeit bei der Motorcycle Action Group United Kingdom,
gründete er in Brüssel den Hauptsitz der Federation of
European Motorcyclists (FEM). Als deren Generalsekretär bahnte
er sich den Weg durch den europäischen Irrgarten und begann,
Bemühungen in Richtung EU-spezifischer gesetzgeberischer Ziele
zu koordinieren. Dadurch gehörten die Motorradfahrer zu den
ersten Nutznießern der demokratischen Veränderungen des
Maastrichter Vertrages. Durch Simons unermüdliche Arbeit wurde
die FEM zu einer bekannten und wirksamen Lobbygruppe bei den
EU-Institutionen.
Als 1998 die FEM mit der EMA (European
Motorcyclists Association) verschmolz, um die Federation of European
Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA) zu bilden, wurde Simon Milward
deren Generalsekretär. Erfolgreich hielt er diese Position bis
zu der Entscheidung, seine ganze Kraft dem Millenium Ride zu widmen.
