Mit über über 2500 Teilnehmern ist das "Gotland Grand National" (GGN) auf der Insel Gotland (zwischen Schweden und Finnland) der größte Enduro-Wettbewerb der Welt - mitten drin: Dirk Thelen aus Bad Münstereifel auf der Wunderlich-BMW. Ein drei stündiges Enduro-Rennen durch die schwedischen Wälder: über Wurzeln, Steine und Schlammlöcher - ein extremer, insgesamt 22 km langer Rundkurs. Es ist eine besondere Herausforderung für jeden Skandinavier, sich mindestens einmal im Leben diesem Wettbewerb zu stellen.
Auf der von Wunderlich vorbereiteten HP2 brachte Dirk Thelen als erster Fahrer überhaupt in der Geschichte des GGN eine 2-Zylinder-BMW an den Start. Im direkten Vergleich zu den leichten Sportenduros sicher eine gleich doppelt so schwere Herausforderung. Keine schnellen Passagen, sondern tief ausgefahrene Spurrillen und Wellen über rutschige Wurzeln und Steine. Die bildschön vorbereitete Wunderlich BMW war schon vor dem Start eines der meist beachteten Motorräder. Das feuerrote Mobil war stetig umringt von Menschentrauben.
Allerdings zweifelten die Insider vor Ort schon im Vorfeld an der Ernsthaftigkeit des Unternehmens - denn die Anforderungen an Mensch und Maschine auf der Insel sind schon ganz besondere. Entsprechend nervös, aber mit guten Vorsätzen ging Dirk Thelen an den Start: So wollte er sich bei dem Massenstart zurückhalten und nichts riskieren.
Dieser Vorsatz hielt so lange, bis das Fahrerfeld auf die Reise geschickt wurde. Als das Startsignal erfolgte und die Motoren donnernd die Arbeit aufnahmen hielt auch Thelen nichts mehr - gerade noch brav hinten angestellt, kam angesichts der entfleuchenden Konkurrenten der Rennfahrer in ihm durch - er schoß hinter dem Feld her, überholte die Nachzügler und fand sich mit der Motorleistung und dem Speed der BMW noch im Mittelfeld wieder. Danach kämpfte er aber mehr mit dem Gelände als mit der Konkurrenz - und beendete nach drei Runden auf Gesamtrang 200 und dem 150. Platz in der Klasse 1 seinen ersten Gotland Einsatz. Was sich hier vielleicht als „nur“ 3 Runden leicht liest, brachte den durchtrainierten Dirk allerdings schon ausser Atem.
Ohnehin schon als anspruchsvoll bekannt war es auf der 2-Zylinder noch viel schwerer, denn in den Schlammlöchern war ohne fremde Hilfe nichts zu machen. Die Zuschauer reagierten jedoch zunehmend begeistert auf den roten Zweizylinder: In der ersten Runde teilweise lediglich als außergewöhnlicher Exot belächelt, wuchs die Bewunderung ob der sportlichen Leistung von Stunde zu Stunde, denn Thelen bewies Standvermögen und die Leistungsfähigkeit der speziell vorbereiteten Wunderlich-BMW. Trotz des hohen Gewichtes half allerdings die sanfte Leistungsentfaltung des großvolumigen Boxer-Motors auf dem rutschigen Untergrund.
